For the work at home employee there can be a lot of pressure to get things done. Sometimes a little bit of time away from the grind can be important. Every item on this list holds an overall importance that is greater than your work (except perhaps sudoku, computer solitaire and online television). Who am I kidding there are several non-essential, but fun things to do on this list. And a few you might want to do just to retain your sanity.

1) Sudoku – addictive, challenging and occasionally mind numbing.

2) Infomercials – for some reason addictive in the same way chips are. You think you don’t need them, but if they’re around you suddenly can’t draw your eyes away from them.

3) Dish Clapper 2000. You have no idea what it is, but you gotta have it.

4) Daytime television talk shows – you never know when a TV judge might offer a verdict you didn’t expect or a talk show host might get belted with a chair by an irate guest. Good times.

5) Phone calls with no real purpose – this can be friends or family, but you often leave thinking, “What was that all about?”

6) Porch swing on a beautiful day – something about sunshine, birds and breeze that makes this situation irresistible.

7) Pets in need of attention – yes their loveable, want outside – then inside, and they’ve got impressive puppy dog eyes.

8) A good book – lose yourself in a good book and it may take a family rescue party to find you.

9) An online forum – so much to post and so little time.

10) Social networking – this is like Hotel California you can check in, but you can never leave. Well maybe you can. Try it sometime.

11) Online television on demand – Wow, television shows, movies and news. Watch it whenever you want. Well, maybe just one.

12) Spring-cleaning – okay so it may not be as distracting as some, but there are times when the urge is powerful – other times? Not so much.

13) Dance recitals – can’t be missed.

14) Sports events – shouldn’t be missed.

15) A child’s forgotten lunch – Why did they miss it?

16) An afternoon walk – and the dog wants to come.

17) An afternoon nap – just resting my eyes.

18) An afternoon latte – need to open my eyes.

19) A well-deserved soda run – need to wake up.

20) A neighbor’s visit – what a nice surprise.

21) A sale at your favorite store – try and stop me.

22) Those moments when you zone out and watch your computer cursor for an hour – who am I and what have I done with my work?

23) Daydreams – wouldn’t a new couch go great with that new big screen TV I saw this past weekend?

24) Cooking your favorite meal – you know what would go good with that? Crêpes.

25) Having friends over – it’s been a while and they like crêpes.

26) Computer solitaire – finds you humming along to the classic, All By Myself.

There are times when side trips can be detrimental to your workload, but there are also times when you either engage in something non-work related or suffer the consequences in added stress. I’m sure you have your own top 26 ways to get sidetracked – hopefully they are used in moderation.
