The hazards in the workplace can often cause injury to the hands. Cut resistant gloves can prevent some of those injuries. While there is no such thing as a glove that is cut proof, there are several different types that can help prevent puncture. With a little extra pressure from a sharp object you will have a cut glove and increasing hazard.

Anything with an edge has the potential to cause injury. A simple pair of scissors, knives, pruners or other cutting tools all have that capability. Using work gloves that are cut resistant work gloves will help prevent some of those injuries.

Materials such as Kevlar provide excellent protection, but as with any product, you need to be aware of the cautions that the manufacturers provide. Kevlar may initially be cut resistant gloves, but wash them once with bleach and you will lose the bulk of that protection because the fibers break down.

Cotton, leather and Kevlar will provide protection from sharp instruments. In the broad range of things, cotton provides the least protection and metal or Kevlar provide the most cut resistant safety gloves. Leather can provide a moderate amount of protection.

There is a distinct difference between chemical protective gloves and those designed as cut resistant gloves. Chemical resistant gloves provide very little if any protection from sharp objects and you will end up with a cut glove.
Proper fit is very important for the best protection. That is the only condition under which the cut proof gloves will be useful. If your gloves are too loose the attempt to grab something will not be as secure. If they are too tight, your movement will be greatly restricted.

One of the most popular type of cut resistant gloves are those made of Kevlar. Kevlar is very sturdy and light which makes it a lot more adaptable to working. The gloves are very flexible and yet very strong and puncture resistant. They also protect against heat and flame. They are commonly used in factories that produce glass, welding, etc. The protective vests used by law enforcement agencies are made of Kevlar as are the gloves used by animal control, veterinarians and construction workers.

There are cautions that need to be observed with Kevlar. They are susceptible to weakening due to the use of bleach or some other chemicals. Follow the manufacturers instructions for cleaning. If you are working with abrasive chemicals, metal mesh cut resistant safety gloves may be a better choice.

The usual content of metal mesh gloves is a fine grade of stainless steel. They will however have a tendency to trap dirt and consequently grow bacteria. More recently introduced metal mesh gloves have addressed this issue and they are less likely to be soiled. They have also improved on the weight and maneuverability of the metal cut resistant gloves.

You will often see these gloves in meat processing plants, cleaning industry, those who sharpen instruments and food service operations. Due to the fact that metal is a great heat conductor, they are not suitable for business that will expose the user to high heat applications.
