Hello Kitty is one name that is instantly recognized by people around the world. The fictional character that was initially popular in Japan, its country of origin, has now become a household name in several countries around the world. Designed by Ikuko Shimizu, she has now become part of the local folklore in Japan. The reference to the character in Japanese culture is something that people have got used to these days. The character was first bought out in Japan in the early 1970s and pretty soon made an entry into the United States of America too.
The television series based on the character was helpful in popularizing the Hello Kitty legend. It was aired on Toon Disney and CBS in the United States and the channel TV Tokyo in Japan. The character Kitty lives along with her parents and her twin sister in the television series. The series with the sisters Kitty and Mimmy became extremely popular across Japan with children in particular being able to easily identify themselves with the characters.
The first television series on Kitty was followed by another animation series that ran on Japanese television in the early 1990s. This series was again immensely popular and was lapped up by both the young and old alike. The 2000s saw the re-emergence of Hello Kitty on television in the form of an animation series that showed Kitty’s life in the Stump Village. This series was also very popular in the United States.
The success of the character can be gauged from the fact that Hello Kitty has already grossed over 15 million dollars worldwide. The stupendous success of the character meant that a series of video games too were launched in order to cash in on the popularity of Kitty. You can find most of the games based on the character being still popular in Japan, even years after their release. Apart from exclusive games featuring the character, Kitty has also been part of other Sanrio characters and video games too. In fact, such has been the popularity of Kitty that there have been exclusive game consoles too released in Japan.
The popular appeal of Hello Kitty has also meant that it has become a successful brand nowadays. A whole lot of fashion accessories to school supplies can be found based on the immensely successful character in Japan. There is even a branded album titled ‘Hello World’ which has performances by leading artists. There is also a guitar album which has been based on the adventures of Kitty. The popularity of Kitty virtually reached sky high, when even an exclusive jet planed named after her was launched in Japan.
There seems to be no looking back for Hello Kitty. The immense popularity of the cute little fictional character meant that the Bank of America even released a limited edition credit card based on Kitty. There are even themed restaurants in many places around the world in her name. The one in Taipei, Taiwan is extremely popular. The cute little girl, a figment of imagination, has even been awarded by the ‘Special Friend of Children’ title by UNICEF too.
