FM radio is one technology which became a part of our lives very long ago. It is used widely in all the regions of the world. It is obvious that each region will have different frequency modulation but the core idea of its operations remains the same everywhere. However, it is unfortunate to highlight that despite various technology sophistications, radio has been neglected.

Today we have moved from analog to digital broadcasting in television. So the question arises that why has radio not experienced better technology? “Radio waves” transmit music, conversations, pictures and data invisibly through the air, often over millions of miles — it happens every day in thousands of different ways! Even though radio waves are invisible and completely undetectable to humans, they have totally changed society.

To answer this question, it is vital to dig into the reasons or the factors which led the analog television broadcasting switch to digital broadcasting. In the first place, digital broadcasting uses 6-8 MHz of bandwidth to broadcast a package of TV channels and other services. Whereas the same bandwidth was used by analog to broadcast one program, hence the switch is justified by mentioning the more efficient use of radio spectrum. Moreover, both the technologies made use of radio spectrum; therefore, all it required was making possible the more efficient use of radio spectrum bandwidth and not complete switch in technologies. Undoubtedly, radio can also witness switch to digital technology but it will take many years and large scale preparation to make technological up-gradation happen.

It is important to mention that switching from one technology to other does not only take time but also consistent efforts to analyze each aspect of the newer technology. Mainly factors like good sound quality, excellent reception of signals and more efficient use of radio spectrum by increasing the capacity; are given the top priority. There have been many inventions which have resulted in digital broadcasting of sound like T-DAB, DRM , DVB-T, DRM and DVB-T2, which certainly have good reception and output; but none of these have been impressive enough so that it can replace analog radio transmission.

FM radio requires a bandwidth of 250 kHz and capacity spacing of 100- 200 kHz, which varies from region to region. It is actually this different combination of bandwidth and capacity spacing which makes the technology switch from analog to digital, quite difficult. Therefore, we have to remain contented with analog radio broadcasting unless technology devises a solution for the existing problem.

In the end, it is significant to mention that up-gradation in scientific technology is not a matter of a few months or decisions of a small organization. Rather, many years efforts, time investment, financial investment and consistent dedication are required for a technology to switch from its current level to a higher level. Sophistication in technology is highly desired by all in various fields, because it not only results in provides comfort to the users but also becomes a source of pride to the inventors. The same is the case in upgrading radio technology but the other factors which are currently making the switch from analog to digital technology can also not be neglected.
