Our plumbing systems consist of many components and mechanisms that all function to keep the plumbing system working properly and safely. Every once in a while a device in the system will have to be removed to be repaired or replaced. One such plumbing device is the drain trap.

A drain trap is a dip in the drain pipe that can be found in floor drains, sinks, toilets…etc. The function of the drain pipe is to constantly remain filled with water in order to prevent sewer gases from leaking into the room which can be toxic if inhaled. Drain traps must stay in good condition to remain working properly; however, there are instances where drain traps can become damaged, corroded, clogged with foreign material, or just too old and worn. In these instances, the trap will have to be removed for replacement or repair. Removing a drain pipe is an easy task for a homeowner. If you plan on removing your drain trap, below is a guide on properly removing a drain trap:

1. To remove a drain trap, you have to first obtain a number of tools. The tools required for the job include: screwdriver, wrench, bucket, and an old towel. It is important to remember that the drain system is delicate therefore you have to be careful when removing the drain trap so that you do not damage it or any other nearby plumbing component.

2. Once you have acquired the necessary tools to remove the drain trap, you should turn off the main water supply or close the water valve under the sink where the water flows through the drain pipe.

3. The next step is to place the bucket under the sink where the water will flow from the drain trap when you remove it. You can also lay the towels around the bucket in case of splashing or spillage of water on the floor.

4. The drain pipe is connected to the bottom of the sink. It is secured with a nut. Use your wrench to remove the drain pipe. Use a wrench and turn the nut to the left to loosen it. After loosening the nut, pull the pipe straight down to complete the removal.

5. Once the drain pipe is removed, you can then remove the drain trap. The tail piece will first have to be removed. Then, unscrew the drain trap. If the drain trap is a swivel kind, the curved trap components will come out easily. If the drain pipe contains a clean-out plug which you will see at the bottom of the pipe section that curves, use your wrench to take it out. If there is no clean-out plug, you just need to unscrew the slip nut to take out the drain trap. Once you can access the drain trap, remove it while holding it in the upright position.

The drain pipe is a vital part of the plumbing system that needs to be maintained so it remains in good working order to prevent sewage gas does from escaping. This is very important because sewage gas is harmful and the gas can not always be detected. Regular maintenance of the plumbing systems as well as having annual inspections by a plumber will ensure that components stay in top working condition.
