Landscaping can greatly improve the look of any home or yard. It is a fun project that can bring the family together, be an outlet for creative impulses, and simply create a beautiful retreat.
In addition to the layout of trees, rocks, plants, water, and accessory placement, many people choose to install pavers. Pavers are beautiful works of art that function as walkways.
In order to install a beautiful paver walkway, you should first look on-line at various designs. These designs will give you ideas for how you would like to design your own paver walkway.
Once you have drawn a design including the specific measurements and colors, you can begin the tool gathering and preparation. To install the pavers you will need a brick masonry saw, flat plate vibrator, a carpenters level, tape measure, rubber mallet, rake, shovel, timber stakes, string line, broom, safety eyewear, a one by ten foot length piping, and a two ten foot length by one centimeter diameter pipes.
You will probably have to rent the brick masonry saw and flat plate vibrator from a local handy-man store. After you have collected the necessary equipment, you will be ready to begin the site preparation.
This is the most important step of the entire process. Be sure to take time to complete this step correctly and perfectly.
The preparation of the site should include the preparation of the subsoil and paver bed. The strength of the paver walkway depends on this preparation.
After doing this, mark the area that will be paved using wooden stakes and spray paint the area that is supposed to be dug out. This will ensure that you do not do too much extra digging.
Next you should place grade levels and tie string line between all of stakes and make certain to slope the grade down from any buildings so that water running down the path will not cause damage to the foundation of the home. This grade should be about two inches in height per eight feet of pavers.
After completing that step it will be time to dig. Take of the top soil and sub soil within the area you marked previously. There should be a ditch of at least ten inches by the time you are done.
Then, fill the first five inches of the ditch with a base material. The next one and half inches should be filled with setting sand. This will leave three and half inches for the paver bricks, which is about the typical thickness.
As you fill the bottom of the ditch, be sure to sure the plate vibrator machine to pack down the new materials. This will create a firm and stable foundation that will support the bricks and the weight of people as they walk on the path.
Place only a little of the base material, about 3/4 of an inch, and then compact it, and then place another 3/4 of an inch of the base material. This solid base is vital to the quality of the path.
Once the base material is laid, lay the 2 pipe lengths down eight feet apart from each other and parallel to each other. Spread the sand between the two pipes, and then level it out using the piece of wood.
Add more sand as needed between the pipes. In contrast to the base material, you do not want to compact the sand.
The compacting of the sand and the brick must occur at the same time for the pavers to become properly embedded. After laying the sand, you can start laying the pavers.
Start in the middle and work outwards. This way if you measured incorrectly it can be easily rectified. The pavers should be placed about one eighth and an inch a way from each other.
Keep the string line you made in mind while laying to make sure that you are laying the pavers as straight as possible. When you are done, examine your work.
If a paver needs to be adjusted, use a screwdriver to make the adjustments. The edging material should have been installed before the setting sand and pavers to prevent movement of the pavers.
Then, compact the bricks and sand to make sure they will stay where placed and provide a solid walkway. This beautiful walkway will be a masterpiece in your back yard.
