So you’ve figured out you want a radar detector. It’s definitely a great investment. But now you’re wondering, which one should I get? Maybe you’ve seen that Whistler radar detectors have low prices and receive great ratings. I can’t think of a better beginner’s radar detector than a Whistler! Lets go over a few of the units, shall we?
The Whistler DE1788 Cordless radar detector is one of the better wireless units. Includes rechargeable batteries, home battery charger, and a DC power cord. Dual use battery or DC power operation. It has 360º radar (X, K, Ka, superwide Ka) and laser detection as long as POP detection built in. It also has a blue LED that will display the outside temperature!
The Whistler PRO-58 and PRO-78 are both great radar detector units. According to RadarReviews.net, the PRO-58 “is a high end model from Whistler’s high performance Professional Series. This model detects the new POP mode feature of some radar guns, and incorporates a high gain optical lense for increased laser sensitivity. The Whistler Pro 58 also features 3 City modes for a reduction in false alerts. An Alert Priority feature makes sure the most important alert is displayed if multiple alerts are detected.” When reviewing the PRO-78, Laserveil.com was very complimentary, having stated: “Both the Whistler Pro 78 and XTR-690 are AAA home-run hitters! … It is my opinion that these new Whistler radar detectors represent two of the greatest values in radar detector ownership, today. If it is your desire to have a full-featured radar detector which provides good protection against police radar, particularly against Ka-band, and are budget minded, you need not look further than either the Pro 78 or XTR-690.” RadarReviews.net also had this to say: “The Whistler Pro 78 offers performance exceeding that of any previous Whistler detector! The Pro 78 is Whistler’s flagship “Professional Series” model, and contains Whistler’s new, re-engineered antenna that offers considerably improved Ka sensitivity and false alert filtering over previous Whistler models. The Pro 78 also offers all of the features you would expect in a high performance detector. It will detect POP mode radar and provides Whistler’s Real Voice alerts. The Pro78 provides an intense blue text display with and auto-dim feature, which makes the Pro 78 easy to read both day and night. Designed with the professional driver in mind, the Pro 78 includes a hardwire kit, non-skid dash pad, and three year warranty. The Whistler Pro 78 also delivers several features that are new to Whistler. These are: “periscope” blue alert LEDs on the top of the unit, a battery voltage meter, and true VG-2 immunity. Other Whistler detectors employ “VG-2 cloaking”, in which the detector shuts itself down when it detects the VG-2.”
Which brings me to my last radar detector I want to share with you: the XTR-690. Continuing from the Laserveil.com review, they also said “The Whistler Pro 78 and Whistler XTR 690 (with compass) models represent a tremendous value (with street prices around $170) for the money and provide performance that rivals the top tier detectors, especially on Ka-band and laser.” When it comes to POP radar, they say “the Whistler Pro-78/XTR-690 detected both K and KA POP RADAR.” And, “On the POP RADAR detection front, the Whistler Pro-78/XTR-690 detected both K and KA POP RADAR…” But what about Radar Detector Detectors? They add, “Concerning Radar Detector Detector (RDD) immunity, the Whistler Pro 78/XTR-690 are most impressive—against the SPECTRE III—relative to the top radar detector tier.”
