Recently there has been an increase in the number of natural disasters that have occurred throughout the world. These disasters have many thousands of people wish they had been prepared and thousands more realize that disaster could strike them at any moment, and they should prepare themselves.
Now is always the best time to prepare for disaster. One of the most violent storms that nature may strike you with is a tornado.
While most tornadoes are predictable, they can form in an instant with no warning. In addition, you may not be aware of one right away because they are invisible until they pick up enough dust and debris.
Planning with your family what you are going to do in this kind of situation and making the necessary preparations to carry out this plan are critical to the health and safety of you and your family. Where you will take shelter during this violent storm is critical to your survival.
When a tornado forms out of nowhere, you will have very little time to react. You will have to implement your plan immediately, efficiently and very quickly.
Tornadoes most commonly occur in the Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest. However, they can form in any place in any state at any time.
Even if a tornado is unlikely in your area, you may want to discuss a plan with your family to make sure you are prepared. This ten minute discussion could end up saving their life, even if they encounter a tornado in a different state than where your family lives.
As you discuss your family plan, make sure that it covers several different kinds of scenarios. Your family may be together when disaster strikes or they may not be.
The disaster could be a fair distance away and traveling your direction or it could form practically on top of you. Make sure you will be able to contact one another in each of these cases.
Plan several locations where you can meet up. One location should be near your neighborhood, another outside of your town, and another even farther away.
During a disaster when everyone is trying to get into contact with their loved ones, the phone lines may become jammed and it can be more difficult to call across town than to call an extended family member outside of the state.
Select a family friend or extended family member who lives out of state and make sure that each of your family members knows how to get in contact with that person. This will allow you to coordinate meeting each more easily.
It is also a good idea to find out what your work management expects you to do during an emergency. You will also want to find out the school and daycare policy of the places your children are during the day.
If you need to pick up your children, you will need to incorporate that into your plan. If the daycare is going to move the children out of the area to keep them safe and you are responsible for meeting up with them later, you will also need to know that.
Help these places form a plan if they do not currently have one in place. You could end up saving several lives because of it.
During a tornado, getting to proper shelter is critical. Storm cellars and basements tend to be the best option when you are seeking refuge from a tornado.
However, interior rooms or hallways with no windows are the second best option. Be sure to stay low on the floor in case things start falling and moving around.
If you are caught outside, lie down in a ditch or another low-lying area that will provide you with some protection. However, do not hide under a under pass or bridge as it is likely these things will suffer damage from the tornado.
Once you have found a safe place to take shelter, you will need to stay there until the storm is finished. This could take a while and you will need to make sure that your family is prepared with food, water and other necessities.
If your home is destroyed, you will be glad to at least have one change of clothes and food and water to survive several days until you get help from extended family members. A sufficient food storage could make the difference between survival and misery during a disaster.
