Most not think of their plumbing system until there is a problem. But if you have reduced water pressure in your home you might not have an emergency but it might be the sign of a larger problem. So take the time to inspect your system and call a professional plumber if you think there might be a problem with your line.

If you have had low water pressure for as long as you have lived in your house then chances are that the house was built with half inch pipe rather than one inch pipe. This is the size of the pipe diameter and the smaller the pipe size the lower your water pressure.

If you are looking at building your home in the future make sure to use one inch pipe. It will cost you more than the smaller diameter pipe but it is worth the increased water pressure. The half inch difference could mean up to thirty pounds per square inch in increased pressure.

You can look at other factors that affect water pressure. For example check all shut off valves in the system and the one attached to your water meter. The valves must be open all the way so you will have the highest pressure possible.

But if you water meter is sealed you will have to call your water supplier to service it. The seal is there to prevent unauthorized servicing. If you can work on the meter yourself you might have to buy specific plumber tools.

If this is not the cause of the water pressure reduction then you can check all indoor main water shut off valves. This too must be in the fully open position. If one is located on your water meter then you need to call a professional to work on this. This is a complex attachment and you can easily damage the valve if you do not know what you are doing.

When in question, call the professional. If you have checked all valves and you still have low water pressure then there might be a problem with your water pipes. If you live in an earthquake zone do not rule out earthquake damage. You will need to have your pipes inspected for leaks or even breaks along the line.

A blockage or a leak will certainly cause low water pressure in your home. And a leak might be the reason your water bill is higher than usual.

Do not ignore low water pressure. You should inspect your system yourself or call a professional plumber. The last thing you want is a total blockage or worse a flooded house. Water pressure reduction could be a sign that your plumbing has a serious problem that needs to be addressed. This is not an emergency situation yet; but most people wait too long before taking action when they notice reduced water pressure. But with a little preventive action you can avoid a potential water disaster in the future. Inspect you pipes or call your plumber today if you notice water pressure reduction in your home.
