The number one problem with students in the world of research papers is finding a topic to write on that they actually enjoy. This is usually because they are forced to write within the constraints of the class they are taking. Biology wants biology research papers, etc. If the student has no real interest in the class, then writing a research paper can become an exercise in futility. The key is to find a topic that actually interests you and makes your learning engine purr. No matter how much you hate a particular subject or class, there is a research paper topic out there that will be interesting to you.

The first and best step to take is to be proactive. Most classes will have something at least resembling a research paper requirement at some point in the year. You know it is coming, and you need to prepare ahead of time for it. As you work your way through those classes that you dislike, actively search for things about it that interest you. There will be some moment where you will think of a question you would like to know the answer to. That can be your research paper angle or topic. Write them down as they come to you, and then when the assignment comes due you will have a pool of topics that interest you to choose from. Here is an example:

Joe hates his class on World History. He despises learning dates and times and so he has trudged through the classes as best he can. He knows that Mr. Johnson assigns a research paper at the end of the semester, and he is already dreading it. Rather than sitting on his laurels, he starts listening intently to the class, and actively searches out subjects that intrigue him. One day, his teacher mentions the ancient Egyptian Pyramids. Joe realizes that he has always wondered about pyramids and immediately thinks up several potential questions he would love to find the answers to. How did they build the pyramids? What was inside the pyramids? How many pyramids are still standing? He now has a list of topics when the research paper assignment comes due.

You have to realize that writing a research paper on a subject that is interesting to you is much easier than writing on the subjects that are not. If Joe had not made that list, he likely would have been writing about some dates and events, and been bored to tears. His grade would also likely reflect that effort. However, since he wrote his research paper on something he was interested in, it is likely to be more engaging, interesting and better researched. All of these things are what makes an A on a paper.

Start making your lists now, and you will be glad that you did when the research papers are assigned. It is especially effective when you do it for classes that you hate, but it also works well for those that you like already. Spend plenty of time on this, and you can even carry your ideas off to college if you are still in High School. You will eventually use that list of ideas, and likely will use them over and over. Research papers need not be scary. They are simply a reflection of our passions to learn.
