It can cost a lot of money to be fashionable. In today’s fashion world the ripped jean is the hot item to wear this season. Yet purchasing a pair of jeans that have already been ripped can cost almost as much as your mortgage payment. Save some money by purchasing a strong durable work jean like Carhartt jeans and rip them yourself. Carhartt jeans are built for strength so they won’t fall apart once you add a few rips. In addition, you can get them in black, stone-washed or vintage (bleached) styles.

Supplies

• Your Carhartt jeans of course

• Pencil or Tailor’s chalk

• Sandpaper

• Sharp knife

• Bleach

Pattern the Cut

Be sure to plan your cuts before making them. Do not just slash randomly as you might end up with rips in some embarrassing places. First wash and dry your Carhartt jeans and then put them on. Using a pencil or white tailors chalk outline where you want to place your rips.

Wear the Jeans

Next, remove your jeans and lay them out flat on a table. Purchase the roughest sandpaper that you can find from your local hardware store. Rub as hard as you can across your knees, thighs or wherever you decided to make a cut. Then take a sharp knife and rub the blade against the grain of the fabric. If the fabric lines run horizontally then rub vertically and if the fabric lines run vertically then rub horizontally. You want to make a small slit in the denim in each spot where you want a hole.

Holey Jeans

No it is time to make some holes in your Carhartt jeans. Once you have created a slit in the fabric, rub the knife against the edges of the slit until some white strings start to appear. Keep rubbing until you have the size hole you want. Repeat this process wherever you made an outline with the tailors chalk or pencil.

Knee Holes

To prepare the knees for holes, be sure to rub them down more than the other holes. Once they begin to fray spread the hole apart as wide as you want it using the tip of the knife. To get that fuzzy look rub the edges of the hole with the knife until the hole looks messy.

Aging

To give them that worn look, wash your Carhartt jeans with some bleach. The cuts you made will fray even more in the wash so they will look realistic. Or take a cheese grater to those cuts for a wildly frayed look.

Alternative Options

Another way to formulate a hole in your jeans is to use a scissors. Open the scissors and using only one pointed end rub it back and forth over the fabric. You will start to see a lot of scratched and white threads showing through. Keep rubbing until the jeans rip open. Do not cut the white threads holding the new hole intact. They will rip open naturally as you wash and wear your jeans.
