Violence seems to surround us on a daily basis, with crime reaching such proportions that the phrase that never happens in our town is a rare expression of confidence. It is now unthinkable to leave our cars unsecured evening our own driveway, and we would not consider the notion of taking midnight strolls through public parks after dark. We do not feel protected and safe when we are out, and increasingly we turn to home security systems to augment our safety in our domiciles.

Part of the reason we all experience such a widespread discomfort regarding our safety is the relentless progress of terrorism. Because we now have live video footage from the active military operations as they happen, we have an unparalleled exposure to the conflict our military is experiencing. While this may be more reassuring in general over the healthy skepticism we have generated regarding matter of warfare, it nevertheless impacts our basic level of comfort.

While most know intuitively that conducting a war is a violent and tragic affair of man, and also understand academically that the possibility of unarmed and innocent bystanders sometimes are involved or even killed, it is another to see it ourselves. While the purpose of such vivid journalism is to keep the public informed and therefore engaged in our national use of force, the unintended consequence is an increasing feeling of anxiety.

When we see the widespread and seemingly unstoppable ability of violent groups to kill and injure unsuspecting and innocent people, we feel a vulnerability too. The reason terrorism is so effective is that truly one can kill one and frighten many. Leveraging that fear as a tool to gain advantage is the heart of terrorist activity. We will all do what we can to keep our families and ourselves safe, it is a basic instinct.

As an educated people, we know that the events being enacted in far off lands are unlikely to occur here, we are also aware that it could happen on our soil. We feel that the vulnerability extends from a national one to a personal one when we see local crimes juxtaposed with international terrorism, both endeavors are criminal. For many of us, it is time to make the decision to take some action to keep ourselves and our families well.

Adding to our general feeling that we are unlikely to get enough protection from our government is the economic morass we find ourselves slogging through. The decline in revenue to our government mirrors the personal struggles each of us feels during this recession. We see the results of this in the diminishing ability to field properly manned police forces adequate to maintain or safety, and we instinctively fear the criminal element is not only aware but ready and willing to exploit this lapse in protection.

Initially we seek to take the actions that are prudent and will help us ensure our homes are more castle than shed. We avoid the age old hidden key under the doormat. We ensure the house is truly secure before we leave and for the most part while we are home, and we make that final security check before padding off to bed at night. We even check our landscaping to ensure we have not inadvertently provided climbing assistance for criminal to gain access to upper stories or the roof.

Even with all the common sense efforts and even if we make the decision to arm ourselves, we know there is still the chance for us to become victims of crime even in our own homes. Understanding that the limited police force has the entire community to cover does not relieve our concern that a response to our home, if we get the chance to report, will likely take more time than needed to respond and prevent a crime. To that end, dedicated security forces tied to home security systems gives us the opportunity to increase the probability that we will not be targeted, and if we are, that help will arrive much faster.
