In a traditional job there is an imposed disconnect from certain elements that are the status quo at home. When you’re at work you do work things – when you’re at home you do home things, but when you work from home that separation can get a little mixed up.
1. I Forgot My Homework
You drop off your children for school in the morning. Each child has the responsibility to make sure they have everything they need for the day. You make sure they have lunches packed on those days when the cafeteria is serving mystery meat and your progeny is just not interested in guessing, but you can’t always catch it if they leave their homework at home. When you worked a traditional job this was never an issue because you couldn’t go home to get it. Now? Well, you’re home so it’s so much more convenient for your kids to rely on a ‘forgotten homework’ pipeline they never had before – and parents hate guilt.
2. Are You Busy?
You’ve become good friends with someone down the street. You used to get together on the weekend or grab a cup of coffee. Now? Well, they think that because you don’t leave your house you need company. Sometimes you do.
3. What Time Is It?
We all need rewards for just surviving each day, for the work at home employee that can be a favorite show or movie that you really want to watch during the day. Trouble is you can zone out and watch another show or you might fall asleep only to wake up frustrated that you missed the show, missed doing your work, or missed picking the kids up from school.
4. Could You Help Us Out?
You’re as much a ‘giver’ as anyone. You’ve always enjoyed helping others, but the trouble can come when organizations you’ve assisted in the past learn that you now work at home. In their minds this often equates to an individual who can be called on whenever they need a helping hand. This can be especially hard if you have difficulty saying no.
5. Pets Know You’re Home
When you went to a traditional job your pet was either relegated to the outdoors where they learned to quietly live in the absence of human companionship or they disturbed the neighborhood (but you weren’t home to stop them). When your home they want to play, they let you know they are hungry, thirsty, need to go outside or want your attention. You love your dog, but the whining is driving you crazy. You love your cat, but don’t like her crawling across your keyboard.
6. The Snooze Alarm Can Be Silenced
You can start work whenever you feel like it, so you can sleep in. The problem is this can also create later nights and a terribly mixed up schedule. As a work at home employee you won’t even need an alarm clock, but maybe you might use it to help you cope with all the reminders that you are a work at home employee.
Leaving the traditional workforce for a job working from home will require some adjustments. It’s not only possible it’s happening everyday – perhaps even in your neighborhood.
