Because of the world economic downturn, people look for ways to increase their household income to support their ever-growing needs. It is encouraging to know that we can actually do this in the comfort of our home. Home-based business is the current trend. Housewives, students, and even professionals engage into doing business at their homes.

Starting your very own home-based business is easy. You do need expensive materials and invest a huge amount of money to put up one. All you need is creativity and passion to do it. One of the easiest products to make and sell is taper candles. These are the most common type of candles. Stores selling these candles would offer you various colors, sizes, and scents.

Before you can start making your candles, you need to gather the materials to use. Online candle supply shops and craft shops can offer you a wide variety of choices: To start your own candle-making business, you have to secure these materials first:

1. Wax: Choosing the type of wax for your candle is an important step. Although the conventional material used for making candles is wax taper, you can also use beeswax taper instead. However, it is significantly more expensive than wax tapers. There are various types of wax available in the market like soy and paraffin. Paraffin wax is the most commonly used wax because it is less expensive than soy wax. However, some people prefer soy bean waxes because they are cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

2. Wicks: The wick is like a fuel pump that delivers fuel to the flame. You can use a wick chart to determine the appropriate size of the wick to use for your candle. Wicks should be longer than the length of your candles. There are two types of wicks: the flat wicks and the square wicks. Flat wicks are used for taper and pillar candles; and are composed of flat-plaited or knitted fibers. Square wicks are most favored for beeswax candles. They are more rounded than flat wicks.

3. Thermometer: The wax need to reach a specific melting temperature that should be maintained to prevent it from drying. Thus, you need this instrument to know the temperature of the wax. Please be careful in handling hot objects for you might get burned.

4. Double boiler: This is used to avoid heating the wax directly.

5. Container for dipping: This container should be deeper than the height of your candles. This is where you dip the wicks several times to form the layers of the candles.

Other additives: You can also add fragrances and colorants to your candles. In using fragrance, you should know how much to add to your candle or it will prevent your candle from burning properly. Colorants like dye are usually used to color the candle all the way through because they burn well. Using the right product would greatly help increase the profitability of your home-based business.

These are basically what you need to make your very own taper candles. For beginners, it might be hard to produce a perfect batch of candle sticks, but with constant practice, it is not impossible to do. Candle making is the most preferred home-based business because of its effortlessness and profitability.
