For many centuries, blackjack has been one of the most popular card games among different countries around the world. As a matter of fact, it has drawn more players than other card games, primarily because it does not purely rely on luck. In order to win, you should be able to combine skill or strategy and chance. Although the game can be complex, the main concept is to get the highest hand, without going over 21. There are several variations of the game, depending on where you are playing, and the strategy that can be used also depends on the player.

Here are some of the basic rules in playing blackjack. Since Aces are counted as either one or eleven, it is considered as the most versatile card that is in the deck. All Face cards are counted as ten. If a player is dealt with a hand that adds up to 21 in his first two cards, then it is called blackjack and would mean that he automatically wins the hand. If a player is dealt with doubles, meaning a pair of cards which have the same value such as two sevens or sizes, he could opt to split or to play two separate hands, using one of the cards for each hand. If a player gets a hand which goes over 21, he busts or forfeits his hand. If a player is dealt with two original cards, he could either choose to either hit or to be dealt with a new card or to stand by the cards that he already has, depending on the strategy that he is using to win.

In order to have the best chance of winning, players need to understand the blackjack basic strategy. Although the strategy can be complicated, basic strategy dictates that a player should stand on a hand that totals 17 or more. Players should also stand on lower numbers, but this would depend on what the dealer shows as his card. If this strategy is followed according to the situation, it reduces the advantage the dealer has to nearly even, though the dealer still retains a slight advantage.

If the dealer is showing an Ace, a player has the chance to buy insurance. Generally, buying insurance is not a very good idea to win the game. This is because the advantage of the house on an insurance bet could be as high as 15%. Buying insurance essentially means betting that the dealer holds a card that is valued at 10, and therefore a natural blackjack. That can be a 10 card or any one of the royal suits. Buying insurance would usually require half the original bet of the player on the hand. In the event that the dealer does have a natural blackjack but the player does not, the player would win back his insurance money and the original bet that he placed. In the event that both the dealer and the player have natural blackjacks, the player would win 1-1 on the hand.

Other popular strategies which are used in blackjack would include the positive or negative progressive systems. A negative progressive system would involve the doubling of the bet every time the player has a losing hand and once he wins, that amount would go back to the original bet amount and start over. The positive progressive system, on the other hand, works the opposite way. This strategy involves betting with the original amount up until he wins, at which time, he increases the amount that he would be betting with every hand he wins. If he loses a hand, he would have to go back to betting the original amount and start over.

Keep in mind that in blackjack, the best strategy would be to have a strategy or a plan that you would commit to before you start to gamble. You will also need to learn how to walk away once you win a certain amount or set an amount that you would be prepared to lose even before sitting down.
