Many years ago the standard in heating was a fireplace. The standard in air conditioning was opening your windows in the house, and letting the breeze sweep through. If you have a large house you may want to consider central heating furnaces. Conversely if you have a small apartment a simple radiator may be the best option.

For cooling there are also many varieties. There are swamp coolers, window a/c units, and central air. For cooling your residence location along with the size of your residence will likely play a large part in what you choose. If you are in a dry climate, swamp coolers may not be effective. This is true for window units in a large residence, unless you have several.

The most common choice is a central air conditioning and heating unit. This is an all in one unit that is beneficial in larger houses. You simply set your thermostat to what you want your house to be, and it does the work. You can adjust it to your comfort level any time.

On the automatic setting it will keep your house at your preferred temperature year round. Some models have to be changed from heat to cool; other new models will change automatically from air conditioning to heating. Most consider these the best models because you will not need to change your settings in a heat wave or cold snap.

One negative side is that most units tend to be a dry air heating and cooling. People have stated this can cause sinus irritation in already dry conditions. There are remedies for this, such as humidifiers that can be placed around the house, whilst newer units are beginning to see additions that include such functions.

The biggest negative is that it can sneak up on your electric bill, and you may need to adjust it for your budget comfort. Again, developments help here, as they are increasingly available in energy efficient models to help reduce the financial impact. As long as you set it to a reasonable temperature you will achieve comfort both physically and financially.

Remember to pick the air conditioning and heating units that are best for your comfort, as well as type of residence. In smaller places the smaller units will work the best for a lower cost. However, in larger homes you may need many units to achieve the comfort you seek. If you shop around and research the units available in your area you will be able to determine your needs.
