Once you have the racing form, take the time to study the performance of each horse on previous races. Compare the times of the horses to know which one is consistently the fastest. The racing form will also have information such as the length of previous races. Check how the horse you are planning to bet on performed in a race that has a similar distance to the one which you would be betting on.

Check the pari-mutuel board or the display which shows the odds for each of the horses in the race. Odds are generally expressed as a ratio like 2-1, meaning you would be earning two dollars for each dollar you would be betting if that particular horse wins. Odds are usually based on the number of people that are betting on a certain horse. Popular horses would have lower odds; and although they are more likely to win, betting on them will earn you smaller returns. Unpopular horses, on the other hand, have higher odds but they can certain help you win big if they do win in the race.

You then need to choose the horse you will be betting on and decide on the type of bet that you will like to make. Some of the basic bets in horse racing would be: Win, which would pay off if your horse comes in first place; Place, which would pay off if your horse comes in either in first or second place; and Show, which would pay off if your horse comes in first, second or third place. The bets to Win generally pay the highest. Aside from these, there many other bet types and combinations which are offered by different racing venues.

The next step is to place your bet by going to a ticket window. You need to indicate the name of the track and the number of the race. You should also specify the number of the horse or horses that you are betting on the race as well as the type of bet you want to make and the amount that you are betting. A lot of racing venues today already have pre-printed betting slips that you can easily check off before handing to the cashier.

You will then need to get your ticket from the cashier and double-check all of the information before walking away. Put away your ticket for safekeeping and then watch the race.

If you do win on your bet, make sure to wait for the official winnings amount on the screen before collecting your money at the ticket window.
