Incorporating mulch into your landscaping could be the answer to many of your gardening issues. For example, mulch can help preserve the heat around your plants in case the weather suddenly freezes.
Without the mulch, your plants would have died. Mulch is technically another layer that covers the dirt where your plants are planted.
In addition to protecting your plants from severe weather changes, mulch can preserve the water in the soil and prevent weeds from growing that would cause more maintenance of your garden.
Many of the insects that would be harmful to your plants would also be deterred by the mulch. Mulch is also resistant to soil erosion due to heavy rainfall.
There are so many benefits offered to a gardener by mulch that no garden should be left without it. There are several varieties of mulch to choose from.
The first type of mulch is the organic mulch. Organic mulches are usually formed out of hay, straw, shredded bark, and other biological substances.
Many gardeners prefer organic mulches because they are very low maintenance. These mulches do decay over time and will need replaced.
The second type of mulch is the plastic mulch that is spread over the garden with holds cut in it for the plants to grow through. Large agricultural farmers usually rely on plastic mulch to perform the necessary tasks.
There are also rubber mulches, rock mulches, and gravel mulches that are occasionally used, but are less well known. All of these mulches retain heat and can effectively protect your plants.
When adding mulch to your garden, start by preparing the soil and removing all of the weeds that you do not want. Then, use a wheelbarrow to transfer the mulch from the truck or pile to the garden or flower bed.
Spread thickly around the plants. If the plants are strong, tall bushes the ideal mulch depth is about six inches.
However, if the plants in the garden are smaller, the mulch will have to be spread thinner to accommodate the plants. The thick layer allows the mulch to have to room to settle and still provide a secure covering over the dirt.
The best time to lay mulch is at the beginning of the growing season. The thick layer of mulch will also allow some of it to get scattered throughout the year and still cover the ground.
For gardeners who do not have a lot of time to keep up on garden maintenance or weeding, mulch is absolutely essential. Mulch is very effective at preventing weed growth.
While applying regular mulch at the wrong time can be harmful to the plants, it is always the perfect time to add compost to the soil. However, that absolute perfect time to apply compost is also in the spring around planting time.
Compost is vital to the growth of healthy, productive plants. The nutrients provided from compost are essential to producing the best garden possible.
Make sure that the compost has completely degenerated into soil. Compost that is only half decomposed is never good for plants, but it can really help the soil if it is mixed in with the dirt during October or November.
Then, the compost will be able to decompose the rest of the way before spring, and the nutrients will be able to spread throughout the dirt.
Straw or hay can also be very beneficial to your plants when they are slightly older than seedlings. It is also important to wait until the soil warms up, otherwise the mulch layer will prevent the soil from getting warm rather than keeping it warm.
The straw or hay will also help keep the produce out of the dirt. There are so many benefits to using a layer of mulch in gardening.
Big, beautiful, green gardens are possible with the use of techniques such as using a layer of mulch.
