If you have children and you are considering working from home, it might seem like a wonderful option. But you do need to consider all the angles before you take the plunge.
The bonus is that instead of having to find a child minder while you go out to work each day, you will be at home with your kids instead of missing out on everything they get up to. But how much work do you honestly think you will be able to do while they are getting under your feet?
Parents know that kids don’t run to timetables. If you ask them to play quietly for two hours while you get some important work done, the chances are they will forget what you said ten seconds after you said it. That is to be expected when it comes to children, unfortunately this means that working from home effectively could be very difficult.
It’s not so bad if your children are of school age. Between the hours of around 9am and 3pm you could reasonably expect to be able to work uninterrupted. But you need to be disciplined and not get sidetracked into doing anything else. After all, if you were working outside the home you wouldn’t be able to stop and put the washing on or go and empty the dishwasher.
But even if you could get everything done during school hours, it can be a problem during school holidays. Just imagine trying to keep your business going during the six week summer break. Could you do it? Could you fit in your work hours in the evenings once the kids are in bed asleep? Supposing you have a deadline and you cannot fit the work in because one of your children is poorly?
You can see that working from home can actually be more complicated than working for someone else in some cases. This is why it needs careful planning and a healthy dose of realism before you take the plunge. Depending on the ages of your children and whether or not you have a partner who can help out in this situation, it might be that working from home won’t work for you at all. Think about all the options and what you would do in certain situations before you make the change.
This isn’t meant to sound negative or impossible. Plenty of parents can and do work successfully from home every single day. Indeed, if you plan ahead, be realistic and have back up plans just in case something should go wrong – which you can bet it will sooner or later – you can become a successful home working parent.
You just need to be prepared and be ready to tackle a changing timetable depending on what your kids might be doing. This is done more easily when you work from home – provided you are ready for it and you are happy to do so. If you would find it a huge challenge then perhaps working from home isn’t for you.
